Senator Carol Weston Attends New England Board of Higher Education’s Excellence Awards Dinner

AUGUSTA – On Friday, March 9, Senator Carol Weston, of Montville, and her husband Peter attended the New England Board of Higher Education’s annual Excellence Awards Dinner in Boston. The Senator was a guest of John Fitzsimmons, President of Maine’s Community College System. Also in attendance were Representative Jane Crosby Giles, of Belfast, and her husband Mike.

Among the recipients of the New England Board of Higher Education’s Excellence Award was the Hutchinson Center. The Hutchinson Center, located in Belfast, is a branch of the University of Maine, and offers undergraduate, graduate and professional development courses to area residents. Named after former University of Maine President Frederick E. Hutchinson, the center offers fall and spring courses, tutoring services and professional seminars.

The Hutchinson Center’s Director, Dr. Margaret Malmberg, visited Sen. Weston at the State House in February, when she had an opportunity to observe legislative proceedings in the Senate Chamber, and attend meetings with the Senator, including a leadership discussion with the Governor. Dr. Malmberg accepted the Excellence Award on behalf of the Hutchinson Center, delivering remarks of thanks at the reception.

The Senator was thankful for President Fitzsimmons' invitation and welcomed the opportunity to observe Dr. Malmberg’s acceptance of the Hutchinson Center’s award. “This is a very exciting occasion for me,” she said. “I was present at the opening ceremony of the Hutchinson Center, and to recognize it tonight, and congratulate Dr. Malmberg on her progress and dedication, is a great feeling. The Center’s award proves that with some hard work, quality support and the commitment to make a difference in your community, success is always possible.”
