FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARCH 13, 2007

AUGUSTA – Senator Roger Sherman, of Houlton, has been appointed to the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Task Force.  He and Senator Dave Hastings, of Fryeburg, will serve as the Maine delegation on the Task Force, which includes legislators and private sector representatives from all over the country.

As a member of the Task Force, Sen. Sherman will play a major role in developing policy ideas that will reduce crime and violence in cities and neighborhoods throughout the United States.  By developing these policy proposals, the Task Force has championed model bills that would hold criminals accountable for their actions and providing swift and certain punishments for those crimes.  In developing these policies, the Task Force has committed itself to increasing safety without increasing the government’s ability to intrude into the lives of law abiding citizens.

The Task Force has also taken up issues that include eco-terrorism, identity theft, child firearm safety, and preventing violent youths from committing crimes in school.  The Task Force develops model legislation to facilitate the implementation of these policies in the states and educates other American Legislative Exchange Council members through Task Force meetings, issue briefings, and special workshops throughout the country.

Sen. Sherman is looking forward to taking part in developing successful proposals that will increase the safety of Mainers, and all Americans.  “Maintaining safety is an effort that knows no state border,” he said.  “The opportunity for truly successful policies is available by bringing leaders together from all across the country, and I am looking forward to playing my part in this effort.”

Sen. Roger Sherman represents District 34; southern and central Aroostook County, including Fort Fairfield, Houlton and Presque Isle.  He can be reached in Augusta at 287-1505, in Houlton at 532-7073, or by e-mail at rsherm_2000@yahoo.com.
