Senator Roger Sherman Appointed to National Conference of State Legislatures’ Agriculture, Environment and Energy Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARCH 27, 2007

AUGUSTASenator Roger Sherman, of Hodgdon, has been appointed to the Agriculture, Environment and Energy Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).  His membership on the committee, which is one of NCSL’s 11 standing committees, will extend through 2008, unless he is reappointed at that time.

NCSL, based in Washington, D.C., is an organization committed to bringing leaders from all over the country together to explore and develop sound policy proposals that will improve the governing of a state, as well as the relationships between state and federal government.  Each of NCSL’s 11 standing committees are composed of state legislators from across the country who are asked to bring the perspective of their chamber to the state issues each committee addresses.  In the past, members of these committees have been asked to testify at congressional hearings and meet with federal agency officials.

As a member of NCSL’s Agriculture, Environment and Energy Committee, Sen. Sherman will join leaders from across the country in exploring a wide range of policy issues.  Topics that Sen. Sherman’s committee will examine include: agriculture, clean air, electric utilities regulation, environmental health, natural resources, rural development, and water policy.  His committee will meet three times over the course of the year; in Washington, D.C., Boston, Massachusetts, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Sen. Sherman; a former chemistry teacher, lawyer and beef farmer; was pleased with his appointment to NCSL’s Agriculture, Environment and Energy Committee.  “I’m looking forward to gathering with legislators from across the country to delve into the important issues and policies this committee addresses,” he said.  “My professional experience in the private sector, and my current role as a public servant, will provide me with a useful perspective when discussing these issues with other legislators.  I can learn a great deal from my fellow NCSL committee members and I hope to incorporate these ideas into discussions about our own rural development and agricultural policies.”

Sen. Sherman represents southern and central Aroostook County, which includes Fort Fairfield, Houlton and Presque Isle.  He can be reached in Hodgdon at 532-7073, in Augusta at 287-1505, or by e-mail at rsherm_2000@yahoo.com.
