Senator Christine Savage to Serve on the Transportation Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DECEMBER 29, 2006

Augusta – Christine Savage of Union has been assigned to the Joint Standing Legislative Committee on Transportation for the 123rd Legislature.  Representing District 22, which includes Appleton, Camden, Criehaven Twp., Cushing, Hope, Matinicus Isle Plantation, North Haven, Owl’s Head, Rockland, Rockport, South Thomaston, St. George, Thomaston, Union, Vinalhaven and Warren, Savage will add this committee assignment to her list of legislative duties.

As a long-standing member of the Transportation committee, Senator Savage will continue to be closely involved in policy proposals relating to, among other issues, the Department of Transportation, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Maine Turnpike Authority, the Highway Fund, highway and bridge construction and maintenance and waterways.

“I’m excited to once again begin my committee responsibilities.  I was elected by the people of District 22 to represent them in Augusta, but serving as a State Senator also involves working for the good of all Maine people, and committee assignments are just one of the ways to fulfill that obligation,” Senator Savage said.

The condition of Maine’s highways and bridges has become a contentious issue recently, and there will undoubtedly be legislation submitted to address those concerns in one way or another.  With 2,400 bills submitted for legislative action so far, the Transportation committee will be working to sift through all Transportation related proposals and review them accordingly.

“I take my membership on the Transportation committee very seriously, because the condition of Maine’s roadways and transportation issues in general are of primary concern to the people of Maine,” Senator Savage said.   “We need to fix Maine’s roads, and we need to do it in a way that looks ahead 10 or 20 years so we won’t have to keep wasting time and dumping money into a short-term, quick fix.  A great deal of analysis and attention is required to determine how effective a proposal will be, and what those effects will be on all parties involved.  I will not take this responsibility lightly.”
