Senate, House Republicans to Provide Weekly Response to Governor’s Radio Address

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH 9, 2007

AUGUSTA – Republicans from the State Senate and House of Representatives will be providing a weekly response to the Governor’s radio addresses aired on radio stations throughout Maine.

Each week, a Republican member of the Senate will alternate with a Republican member of the House to respond to the Governor’s address. Both the Governor’s address and the Republican response will concern the same issue, allowing listeners to hear two sides of a debate. The first response, which will address the issue of education reform, will be aired Saturday, March 10 and will be delivered by House Republican Leader Josh Tardy, of Newport.

“I think it’s important that Maine’s citizens get to hear directly from Republican leaders about their ideas for improving Maine,” Rep. Tardy said. “Republicans, through their championing of lower taxes, fiscal responsibility and healthcare reform are the party of solutions. I am confident that as more Mainers hear our positive message of reform they will appreciate the need for a change in leadership here in Augusta.”

Senate Republican Leader Carol Weston, of Montville, also welcomed the opportunity. “With these weekly responses we can offer Mainers another perspective surrounding the issues and challenges they face every day,” she said. “It would be a disservice to our constituents and all Maine citizens, if we did not provide them with our own positions, and if we did not hold the Governor accountable for the decisions coming out of the executive branch.”

The Republican response will be recorded in MP3 format and can easily be sent via e-mail. Stations interested in broadcasting the Republican response should contact Chris Cinquemani, Communications Director for the Senate Republicans, at chris.cinquemani@legislature.maine.gov or Jay Finegan, Communications Director for the House Republicans, at jay.finegan@legislature.maine.gov.
