February 2, 2007

AUGUSTA – Senator Kevin Raye (R-Perry) has announced that opportunities exist for college students to participate in Maine State Government Summer Internship Program.  The program, administered by Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, is a 12-week long opportunity for accepted applicants to work within Maine State government.

The 2007 program will run from Monday, May 21 through Friday, Augusta 10, and all interns receive a weekly salary of $340.  In addition to temporary employment with the State of Maine, this program also entails a seminar in Augusta, and concludes with a reception at the Blaine House.

In 2006, participants interned in State departments that included the Department of Transportation, the Department of Conservation, and the Department of Labor, and worked on major projects such as conducting a tidal marsh study, analyzing new businesses to look for similarities and differences between new businesses started at different times, and researching and developing a 30-page report on Women’s Economic Security in Maine.

Further information, and applications for the program, is available by visiting http://www.umaine.edu/mcsc/MeSGIP.htm, or by calling Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at 581-1646.
