RAYE REAPPOINTED LEAD SENATE REPUBLICAN

ON GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

For Immediate Release

Monday, January 8, 2007

AUGUSTA, ME – Senator Kevin L. Raye (R-Perry) has been reappointed to a second term as the lead Senate Republican on the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee.  Raye’s appointment comes two weeks after he was named the Senate Republican Lead on the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services.

The Government Oversight Committee has oversight responsibility for the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability (OPEGA), which is charged with reviewing the effectiveness and accountability of state departments and agencies.

"I am pleased to return to my position on the Government Oversight Committee," said Raye.  “We have begun the overdue process of increasing accountability in state government.  Maine people deserve to have their hard-earned tax dollars spent efficiently and effectively, and I will continue to keep that foremost in my mind as the Committee works to review and assess a wide range of programs.”

While other legislative committees are controlled by the majority party, the 12-member Government Oversight Committee was specifically established to consist of six senators and six representatives, equally divided between the two political parties.

The full membership of the new Government Oversight Committee is as follows:

Senator Elizabeth H. Mitchell (D-Vassalboro), Senate Chair

Senator Joseph C. Perry (D-Bangor)

Senator Philip L. Bartlett, II (D-Gorham)

Senator Kevin L. Raye (R-Perry), Senate Republican Lead

Senator Dana L. Dow (R-Waldoboro)

Senator Jonathan T.E. Courtney (R-Sanford)

Representative Marilyn E. Canavan (D-Waterville), House Chair

Representative Peggy A. Pendleton (D-Scarborough)

Representative Andrea M. Boland (D-Sanford)

Representative Scott E. Lansley (R-Sabattus), House Republican Lead

Representative Michael A. Vaughan (R-Durham)

Representative Everett W. McLeod, Sr. (R-Lee)

Raye was re-elected to a second term in the Maine Senate on November 7th, capturing 59% of the vote in a four-way race.  He represents Senate District 29, which is comprised of Washington County and eastern portions of Hancock and Penobscot Counties.

Senator Raye can be reached by e-mail at SenatorRaye@downeast.net, or by phone at 287-1505 when the Legislature is in session, or at 853-9406 on weekends.
