AUGUSTA – Senator Dave Hastings, of Fryeburg, has been appointed to the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Task Force.  He and Senator Roger Sherman, of Hodgdon, will serve as the Maine delegation on the Task Force, which includes legislators and private sector representatives from all over the country.

As a member of the Task Force, Sen. Hastings will play a major role in developing policy ideas that will reduce crime and violence in cities and neighborhoods throughout the United States.  By developing these policy proposals, the Task Force has championed model bills that would hold criminals accountable for their actions and provide swift and certain punishments for those crimes.  The Task Force has committed itself to increasing safety without compromising the rights of law abiding citizens.

The Task Force has also taken up issues that include eco-terrorism, identity theft, child firearm safety, and preventing violent youths from committing crimes in school.  The Task Force develops model legislation to facilitate the implementation of these policies in the states and educates other American Legislative Exchange Council members through Task Force meetings, issue briefings, and special workshops throughout the country.

Sen. Hastings was pleased with his appointment to the Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Task Force.  “I value the work that the American Legislative Exchange Council’s various Task Forces accomplish, and I am very happy to be a part of one that has the potential to play such a significant role in the safety of the people,” he said.  “The opportunity to collaborate with leaders from all over the country to develop sound policies is one that I am very grateful for, and I am eager to begin this important work.”

Sen. Dave Hastings represents District 13, which includes Baldwin, Bridgeton, Harrison, Naples, Sebago, Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, Hiram, Norway, Otisfield, Oxford, Paris and Porter.  He can be reached in Augusta at 287-1505, in Fryeburg at 935-3175 or by e-mail at dhastings@hastings-law.com.
