Freshman Democrat, Senator Peter Bowman, Admits:
“The Status Quo Doesn’t Cut It”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUGUSTA – At a press conference announcing the Education Committee hearings taking place on February 5th to address various education consolidation proposals, first-term Senate Democrat Peter Bowman admitted that here in Maine, “the status quo doesn’t cut it.”

Maine has a long record of high taxes, out-of-control government spending, expensive health care costs and unsustainable education spending.  Senator Bowman, a York County resident who is new to State Government, admitted that these were the issues the people of his district were talking about.

Senate Republican Leader Carol Weston, of Montville, was pleased with Bowman’s understanding of Maine’s status quo, and praised him as a public servant who stands out among the Senate majority.  “It is so refreshing when a new legislator disregards a political label and details the issues that are impacting the people of Maine,” she said.  “These are issues that the Senate Republicans, under a Democrat majority, have been fighting to address for years.”

In Maine, Democrats have been in control of the legislature for nearly four decades.  During that time, Maine’s tax burden has increased to the highest in the nation, and health care costs have risen to among the highest as well.  Although control of the State Senate is still in Democrat hands, they now hold only a one vote majority.

“Although Senator Bowman is new to State government, his public acknowledgement of Maine’s challenges has given the Senate Republicans confidence in his ability to work with us,” Sen. Weston said.  “We are hopeful that other members of the majority will be as mindful of Maine’s condition as Senator Bowman is, and embrace the opportunity to work with us to achieve real and positive results for Maine’s people.”
