AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, January 16, seventh grade students from Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta visited the State House to meet their State Senator, Dana Dow, and observe the Senate as it conducted legislative business.

The students, who are currently studying government, were invited by Senator Dow to observe State governing first hand.  Sitting in the rear of the Senate chamber, the students witnessed bill referencing, in which proposed legislation was assigned to various legislative committees for review, and a unanimous vote to confirm John Richardson, former Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, as head of the Department of Economic and Community Development.

“I’m happy to have given the students from Great Salt Bay and opportunity to observe how state government operates,” Senator Dow said.  “Learning about government from textbooks and lectures can be a little tricky sometimes.  It always helps to see, first hand, the procedures involved in the legislative process to completely understand them.”

Senator Dana Dow, of Waldoboro, represents District 20, which includes Alna, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, Edgecomb, Hibberts Gore, Jefferson, Monhegan Island Plantation, Newcastle, Nobleboro, Somerville, South Bristol, Southport, Waldoboro, Westport Island, Whitefield and Wiscasset in Lincoln County, Friendship and Washington in Knox County, and Windsor in Kennebec County.  He can be reached in Augusta at 287-1505, in Waldoboro at 832-4658, or by e-mail at danadow@adelphia.net.
