FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

APRIL 2, 2007

AUGUSTA – Senator Dana Dow (R-Waldoboro) has been appointed by Senate President Beth Edmonds (D-Freeport) to serve as a member of the Maine Food Policy Council.  As a member of the council, Sen. Dow will represent the Joint Standing Legislative Committee on Marine Resources.

The Maine Food Policy Council, created in 1983, is comprised of 11 members.  These members include legislators, state agency employees, public consumers, representatives of the University of Maine System, and food industry representatives.

Sen. Dow will serve a three year term on the council, which may meet up to four times annually.  As a council member, he will aid in the development of a food policy for the State that ensures the availability of an adequate supply of safe, wholesome and nutritious food for Mainers.  He will also take an active role in developing a strategic plan for implementation of the state food policy, which will include benchmarks and criteria for measuring progress in food policy objectives.

The council will also be responsible for submitting a biennial report on its activities.  The report includes an update on the strategic plan created by the council, the progress made in achieving the goals of the council, and a description of actions necessary to implement the council’s recommendations.

Sen. Dow was pleased with his appointment to the Maine Food Policy Council.  “I look forward to taking an active role on this council,” he said.  “I believe my varied background, as a teacher, legislator and business owner, will provide me with a useful perspective on the policies that surround our State’s food quality and supply.”

Sen. Dow represents District 20, which includes parts of Lincoln, Knox and Kennebec Counties.  He can be reached in Augusta at 287-1505, in Waldoboro at 832-4658, or by e-mail at danadow@adelphia.net.
